Bears hire DeCamillis as ST coordinator

Joe DeCamillis, formerly with the Dallas Cowboys, has accepted the position of special teams coordinator/assistant head coach for the Chicago Bears.

Since 2009, Joe DeCamillis has served as special teams coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. Last offseason, the Cowboys blocked him from taking the special teams coordinator/assistant head coach job with the Oakland Raiders.

Yet the Cowboys did not block DeCamillis' move to the Chicago Bears with the same title. The Chicago Tribune first reported that DeCamillis will become the Bears' next special teams coordinator/assistant head coach. He replaced Dave Toub, who was named ST coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday, after nine seasons in Chicago.

DeCamillis interviewed for the Bears' head coach position last week.He lost out to Marc Trestman, who was named head coach this morning, yet DeCamillis is still very much excited to come to Chicago.

"I had a good relationship with Phil [Emery] and got to know Coach Trestman a little bit with Phil and it just worked out very well," DeCamillis told the Tribune. "I think when Dave [Toub] decided to move on that was a chance to get there and keep the special teams tradition going the same exact way that it is which is very, very positive."

DeCamillis has been a special teams coordinator in the NFL since 1988: Denver Broncos (1988-1992); New York Giants (1993-1996); Atlanta Falcons (1997-2006); Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-2008); Cowboys (2009-2012).

DeCmillis worked in Atlanta for three years with Bears GM Phil Emery, who was director of scouting for the Falcons at the time.
