Day two is well under way. In this report we bring you the latest updates from camp, including…
Camp Report Summary - Day 2
Afterward, Smith had no comment. But Wynn said, ''I'm disappointed they couldn't get it done. It's upsetting, but what can you do? He's such a big body on the inside and the attention he gets just from being in there . . . He plays with power and explosiveness. It was an asset to have someone of his skill as big as he is inside.''
Another unnamed offensive player bemoaned Wilkinson's loss.
''He was a horrible practice player,'' the player said, ''but he was a son of a bitch to block on Sunday.''
The move paves the way for more playing time for Jermaine Haley. And it's uncertain if that's a good thing. He'll be paired alongside Brandon Noble. Haley has started only nine games in three seasons and turned 30 in February.
''But I wish Dan could have stayed,'' he said. ''I liked the rotation. But this is nothing new to me. I'm looking forward to the challenge.''
Newly-signed Bernard Holsey has recorded six sacks and started 17 games in his six-year career. Also, Greg Scott was moved from end to tackle and Bernard Jackson is a player the Redskins like. One, or both, could figure in the rotation. And Renaldo Wynn has played tackle in the past. He'd be willing to move inside in a pinch.
Detroit could be a next possible stop for Wilkinson. New England and Atlanta are among teams interested.
Regardless, it's a disappointing end to the Wilkinson chapter. He wasn't a great player here, but he was solid most of the time. There's a reason the players wanted him back--and it wasn't just something they were saying publicly. Thing is, he wasn't worth $3.5 million, but the Redskins have gone from having a Big Daddy to a Big Hole.
. . . QB Patrick Ramsey and WR Laveranues Coles are showing signs of getting in sync. On one pass play, Coles, running an intermediate route across the middle and kept going despite a clogged pocket. Ramsey said receivers often run down if they see that happening. Coles didn't, anticipating Ramsey would hang tough.
And he did, stepping to the right and hitting Coles.
''We're getting there,'' Ramsey said. ''Today was a step forward in that and nothing can replace repetition. You'll know when we've gotten there. We'll just look at each other and know what's going on.''
. . . Linebacker LaVar Arrington said he reads a quote of the day every day. A fan had sent him a business book full of quotes and Arrington enjoys reading them. Tuesday's quote: The measure of a good leader is when you're walking and you're taking your path, you turn around to see who's following.
''It's so simple, but so profound,'' Arrington said. ''That's how guys are around here. And people are following. There doesn't need to be one person deemed as the leader.''
. . . Injury report: Linebacker Kevin Mitchell was held out of the afternoon practice after suffering from cramps in the morning. He was taken to Loudoun County Hospital as a precaution and received intravenous fluids, but returned in the afternoon. . . Running back Ladell Betts, who missed Monday to attend a funeral, sprained his left elbow and is not expected to practice today.. . . Guard Tre Johnson could miss a couple days because of a sore Achilles. He sat out both practices yesterday.
. . . The Redskins practice without pads this afternoon. They have two practices Wednesday and only one on Thursday (in the morning).
. . . They worked on field goals this afternoon for the first time during camp. They also did a lot of work inside the red zone.
. . . Corner Fred Smoot loves coming up with nicknames for himself. Now he has one for defensive tackle Brandon Noble: ''Big Bush.'' Noble has a very bushy beard.
