On Fan Appreciation Day, the Redskins gave a big crowd something good to watch: a scrimmage. Here's…
Morning Report - Day 6
. . . The Redskins worked a lot on different aspects of special teams, pooch punts and onside kicks and fake field goals.
. . . Don't know how good John Hall will be, but I do know this: he's big. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Hall looks like a linebacker. Actually, linebacker LaVar Arrington agrees. After Hall come onto the practice field one day wearing a white jersey, Arrington told him to go back and get a red one, like the color the defense wears.
''That's my kind of kicker,'' Arrington said.
Another story with those two: when Hall first came to Redskins Park, he bumped into Arrington who introduced himself. As Arrington left, he said, ''See ya kicker.'' To which Hall replied, ''See ya Lamar.'' Arrington got the point, and smiled.
. . . No Redskin draws the reaction from the crowd that Arrington does. I was talking to Mike Stock, about a hundred yards from the crowd, when all of a sudden the noise level increased and reached us. Arrington was approaching. He loves toying with the crowd, too. If there are groups of fans on either side of him, he'll make them compete to see who's the loudest, sometimes starting a ''We are Penn State'' chant. The man is unique.
. . . Receiver Laveranues Coles has won fans here already. But he left a few in New York, too. A few were special guests on the sidelines and two children wore his New York jersey. The father told him, ''You broke a few hearts.'' And, ''We only got one year out of these jerseys.'' Coles smiled and said, ''Sorry about that.'' Coles also hugged another member of their family, who was wheelchair bound and mentally handicapped.
. . . Running back Kenny Watson did not practice again this morning because of his injured right knee. It's not serious.
