Tonight was a brand new episode of 24 on FOX. I try to never miss an episode, but a call came in from one of our webmasters asking me if I know about this turn of events. "Know what?" I replied. "The Redskins are in negotiations with Joe Gibbs and it's being reported everywhere."
I could not believe what I was hearing, this news could change the world ..or at least the world as far as Redskins fans are concerned.
Being on Pacific time it was only 9:30 p.m. for me. On the east coast it was nearing 12:30 a.m. but I had to find out more so I have been digging through every available source and low and behold, I have been unable to get anything substantial.
A matter of fact the only thing that is really being said on any of the websites reporting is just a mere few sentences, and the rest talking about history and his Nascar career.
On ESPN, FOX Sports, and CBS Sportsline you will find the same quote:
"The Washington Post, citing sources with connections to Gibbs, reported late Tuesday on its Web site that Gibbs was in serious discussions about returning to the team that he led to three Super Bowl titles."
This quote has set Redskins fans on fire. Our webmaster Rat Boy said "you have to see the message board, it's almost 12:30 a.m. and the board is being flooded!!"
Sounds like the Snyder marketing machine is in full gear once again. Nothing like a little press leak.
So what are the fans saying about this turn of events?
On the Warpath CPND message board fans are in a state of shock and awe. Here are some quotes from the Hardcore forum.
King822 says "OMG BABY...GIVE HIM A BLANK CHECK DANNY AND ALOT OF THINGS YOU SCREWED UP HERE WILL BE FORGOTTEN!!!"
amudgarden says " It is simply too good to be true.
If it is true, two things come to mind:
1) If he comes back, it will be for a piece of ownership...and he would deserve every bit of it.
2) I wonder if it has anything to do with the success his ol' nemesis, Parcells, has had.
It's just too good to be true.
Jurgyfan says "Could Rhodes's interview have been to make him a highly-paid DC, like Marvin?
Did Snyder just reach into his chip bag and see Jerry Jones's bet?
Oh man, it's starting to add up."
InSageWeTrust says "I just hope to God that Gibbs is successful if he returns.
I can't imagine 3 years from now reading "Snyder's an idiot for brining back 'that guy' from NASCAR!""
KevinMac says "Can this be true? Can it be?????
I've had my heart crushed so many times by these losers of the last 11 years. Oh, crap! I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic here, because in truth, I can't see Gibbs getting along with Snyder's meddling. Plus, this still may be a huge joke.
But for one night, for just a few hours, I am the happiest man on the face of the earth."
You can read the entire thread and many others on the Warpath Hogmonster.com message board.
I also spoke to a fan tonight who was lit up by the news for a minute, then came down to reality.
She said "I love Joe Gibbs, he was my favorite when I was a kid, but coming back to the current Redskins would be a mistake for him. Joe Gibbs left D.C. as a hero, but the NFL has changed a lot since his departure, it's just a different game." She also went on to say "But if he did come back it would be very exciting for all Redskins fans!"
So now it's hurry up and wait. How many Redskins fans won't be able to sleep tonight? How many are on pins and needles?
Well just stand by, Warpath will have details as they become available. Look for John Keim's report tomorrow, and check back here often throughout the day.
