Gardner Traded
The
Redskins have apparently given receiver Rod Gardner permission to take a
physical with the Carolina Panthers tomorrow. If Gardner passes, the Redskins
would then complete a trade with the Panthers.
According
to sources, the Redskins would receive a sixth-round pick in exchange for
Gardner, who was the team’s first-round pick in the 2001 draft.
And
then there were two.
The
Redskins signed rookie h-back Manuel White today, leaving only first-round
picks Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell unsigned. With camp starting Aug. 1, it
appears one or both could miss practice time.
White, a
fourth-round pick from UCLA, played fullback in college but has been moved to
h-back in the NFL. In college, he caught 52 passes for 518 yards and three
touchdowns. Some NFL analysts think White could make a decent impact as a
rookie.
Redskins fined
The NFL
fined the Redskins $45,000 for violating league rules regarding practice squad
procedures last season.
The
Redskins landed in trouble when they had too many practice squad players in
practice. The NFL expanded the practice squad to eight players last season, but
in at least one practice the Redskins fielded more than that number.
On that
occasion, the Redskins had announced they cut receiver Gari Scott. But the day
he was supposed to be cut, he actually suited up for practice. Assistant head
coach/defense Gregg Williams said there was a loophole in the NFL rules that
enabled Washington do do this. The Redskins said they could practice more than
the allotted eight, as long as they were done by 4 p.m., the deadline for
submitting their roster to the NFL.
When a
reporter asked the league for clarification on this matter, the league called
the Redskins and told them there was no such loophole. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs
was furious with the reporter who called the league.
