Kicked Out: Tupa to IR

The Redskins today put 17-year veteran punter Tom Tupa on injured reserve with a back ailment, ending his season.

Punter Tom Tupa, whose 2004 performance was considered by many to be of Pro Bowl caliber, was placed on the injured reserve list by the Redskins today. He sustained a back injury in the pregame warm-ups before the last Friday's preseason game against Cincinnati. The move means that he will not play for the Redskins this season.

The 17-year veteran had one of his finest seasons last year, averaging 44.1 yards a punt with a net of 35.2. He ranked among the league leaders in both categories.

The move means that either Andy Groom, a first-year punter with a booming leg or Chris Mohr, another veteran, will handle both the punting and placekick holding duties for the Redskins this year. Recommended Stories
