Redskins Practice Notes: Jacobs Back in Action

Taylor Jacobs may play on Sunday

Taylor Jacobs was back at work today as the Redskins began preparations for their opener on Sunday.

. . . Receiver Taylor Jacobs returned to practice in full pads for the first time since the Aug. 6 scrimmage against Baltimore. Jacobs suffered a sprained toe and said it's about 70 percent recovered. He might play against Chicago Sunday.

. . . Right tackle Jon Jansen suffered a small fracture in the base of his left thumb during a passing drill in practice today. Jansen will need to wear a splint and a cast for the next three games.

. . . Safety Ryan Clark (knee) did not practice after re-injuring his knee against Baltimore on Thursday. But Clark said he'll practice Wednesday. Meanwhile, safety Matt Bowen returned to practice after missing last week with a bruised chest.

. . . Assistant head coach for defense Gregg Williams has his players well-trained: even in casual conversation, his players won't divulge who will start at linebacker (LaVar Arrington or Warrick Holdman) or corner (Carlos Rogers or Walt Harris). Williams hates to talk about who's starting, saying they play so many packages it's irrelevant. But one player did say how well Arrington has looked in practice and in games. And that's encouraging for Washington.

. . . Arrington said he's a changed player after missing last season: "I?ve always known what I was doing, even though people may say I didn?t," Arrington said. "But my play is becoming better because I understand what everyone else is doing on the field."

. . . Chris Clemons had a good line about how his brother Nic now can stop coming to him for money now that both are on the roster. ''Last year I paid for everything,'' he said. ''This year I told him my checkbook is closed.''

. . . Andy Groom was booming the ball in practice, showing good directional skills. Groom earned the job with a strong summer. But special teams coach Danny Smith only said of him, ''He hasn't punted in a game yet.'' Groom has worked on his hangtime, the main thing preventing him from earning a roster in the past.
