The Fans' Turn: Marcus Washington

Posted Oct 15, 2005

The Redskins' Pro Bowl linebacker sat down earlier this week and answered questions from Redskins fans on the CPND Message Board.

The Fans' Turn: Marcus Washington

Rat Boy: Marcus, while I know all about you on the field being an Auburn AND Redskins fan, I don't know much about you off the field. What do you like to do for fun?
Marcus Washington: I like to go to the movies. I’m a big movie buff; I like action and comedy movies. If I’m not going I’m usually home watching one and I love to play PlayStation – NCAA 2006.

Are you always Auburn?
No. I might try to bring Notre Dame back to greatness or run the option with Vince Young. It just depends on how I’m feeling.

Outer BanksTarheel: Marcus, being that you played for Auburn, do you and Chris Samuels (Alabama grad) rib each other a lot about your alma maters?
MW:
There’s more trash talking. Them Alabama guys have been stinking the place up for a couple years. I guess they’re due.

VernB: Marcus, if you could play for any coach who's ever fielded a team in the NFL, not counting Coach Gibbs, who would it be, and why?
MW: I think it would be cool to play for Vince Lombardi. I like his attitude. I’m a big quote person. I love quotes and he had a bag of them

Amudgarden: Do you prefer going up against the larger, power backs like Stephen Davis, or the smaller, shifty backs like Warrick Dunn?
MW:
I like playing against the bigger backs because there’s no dodging in there. You don’t have to worry about him faking you out. They’re coming at you. You’re either the hammer or the nail. I try to be the hammer.

Moramobile: Which style of defense do you prefer the cover 2 that Coach Dungy ran with the Colts or the agressive style that Coach Williams is running?
MW:
Coach Dungy is more of a coverage defensive coach. He really stresses coverage and breaking on the ball. Linemen have to get up field and get sacks. There’s not a lot of blitzing. Coach Williams is the opposite. He’ll blitz you. He likes big linebackers and we have 11 on one going to the ball. With Dungy, you know what you’ve got. You don’t have a big package. It’s mostly Cover 2, a little Cover 3 and a little man to man. But he really stresses coverage and the front four getting after the quarterback.

Newshog: What inspires you?

MW: Well, I don’t know what my inspiration is. I guess just understanding that it’s a privilege and not a right to play in the NFL. There’s not a lot of people who do what we do. There are so many people where I’m from who tried to make it here but didn’t. When I go home and see those guys it makes me feel fortunate and it really makes you want to work hard because you know so many people would give anything to be where I’m at. I try not to take it for granted because I know it won’t last long.
