Novak Cut, LB McCune, TE Johnson Up From PS

Posted Nov 5, 2005

The Redskins cut kicker Nick Novak, a move that was expected with the return to health of John Hall, and promoted two players from the practice squad.

They promoted rookie linebacker Robert McCune and tight end Robert Johnson. With Robert Royal battling calf injuries, the Redskins might need Johnson to be their third tight end. They use a lot of three tight end sets. Johnson has size (6-foot-6, 278 pounds) and speed. But he's been oft-injured in his career.

The Redskins like McCune's physical attributes, though, this summer, they said he was far behind some others in terms of reading offenses. But it appears McCune has improved in that area, a reason for the move. His improvement here also likely spurred the release of rookie Zak Keasey from the practice squad earlier in the week. McCune, if active, could eventually become a help on special teams.

Novak only missed two field goals in his five games, though both were blocked.

Cornerback Dimitri Patterson was also waived.
