They signed defensive tackles Anthony Montgomery (5th round) and Kedric Golston (6th) and linebacker Kevin Simon (7th).
Montgomery, out of Minnesota and Golston, from Georgia, are battling for reserve defensive tackle spots. Unless one of them is able to oust a veteran, they are fighting for one roster spot if the team keeps the same number of defensive linemen as it did last year.
Simon is looking to get past Khary Campbell or Robert McCune to claim a spot backing up middle linebacker Lemar Marshall. After an injury-plagued career at Tennessee, Simon will need to stay on the field if he is to have a chance.
The Redskins released five players to make room for the three on the roster and, presumably, for unsigned picks Rocky McIntosh and Kili Lefotu. The were wide receiver Ron Johnson, defensive tackle Chris Mineo, linebacker Justin Stull, offensive lineman Daniel Martz and cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha.
All but Johnson were undrafted rookie free agents. The only mild surprise in the group was Onyenegecha, an Oklahoma product who was thought to have some good potential in a position where the Redskins didn’t draft anyone and don’t have great depth. However, the handwriting was on the wall this weekend at minicamp when Gregg Williams singled him out a couple of times for mental errors.
