Texas Stadium--Rarely is a kicker credited with
sparking the rally from a big deficit, but the accolades for this game went to
NFC Offensive Player of the Week Chip Lohmiller. He kicked four field goals, all
of them from 45 yards or longer, to help push the Redskins past Dallas.
In the first half, Dallas ticked off touchdown drives of
80, 80, and 84 yards. Tight End Jay Novacek scored the first touchdown on a
three-yard pass from Troy Aikman. On their next possession, the Cowboys fumbled
and Washington had to drive just 28 yards for their first score, a three-yard TD
pass from Mark Rypien to tight end Jimmie Johnson.
Then it was Emmitt Smith’s turn. He scored on a 15-yard
jaunt and on a five-yard pass from Aikman. In between, Lohmiller booted a
53-yard field goal to help keep his team within striking distance.
Something else that helped keep the Redskins in the game
was Smith’s upset stomach. Dallas’ star back didn’t play much and
contributed little after his long scoring run, having been stricken by a stomach
ailment.
Trailing 21-10, the Redskins began to pull it together.
“We were too ready to play,” said Fred Stokes. “We were overhusting,
leaving holes open. In the huddle, we started reminding everyone else to do
their own job and don’t do anyone else’s.”
Art Monk did his job by catching a 37-yard touchdown pass
from Rypien to make it 21-17. Then, eight seconds before halftime, Lohmiller
boomed a 53-yard field goal through the uprights to make it a one-point game at
intermission.
Early in the third quarter, a fumble recovery provided
Lohmiller with another opportunity and he booted a 45-yarder to give his team
the lead. Dallas retook the lead on a 51-yard field goal.
Then the Redskins embarked on a 14-play, 85-yard drive to
take control of the game. The pivotal moment came near midfield when, from punt
formation, up back Brian Mitchell took the snap from center and gained three
yards on fourth and one. The drive spanned the third and fourth quarters,
consuming 8:20 of the clock. Gerald Riggs scored the touchdown on a one-yard run
with 12:48 left in the game.
One more Lohmiller field goal, this one a 46-yarder with just under six minutes
left, gave the Redskins a 33-24 lead. That score rendered a late score on an
Aikman pass to Michael Irvin meaningless.
