Shawn Springs
will miss three to six
weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a minor tear in an abdominal muscle.
That would put Springs in jeopardy for possibly the
first two or three games of the regular season.
Reserve corner Ade Jimoh also is out with a sternum injury, but there's a
chance he'll return within a week. Reserve Ken Wright will replace Springs -- after having a rough Redskins debut. But Wright
has started 47 games in his first seven years.
Springs had been bothered by his pelvic area for a while,
but had practiced and played Sunday, recording a sack. They decided to have him
get checked out Monday, which led to the surgery.
''You need four or five corners in this league to win it all
because someone will get nicked and you don't want a dropoff,''
Redskins secondary/corners coach Jerry Gray said.
Newly-acquired Mike Rumph attended
practice, but did not participate. He has to wait until Taylor Jacobs passes
the physical in San Francisco
before he can practice. Rumph likely will practice
Wednesday.
Rumph admitted he was shocked by
the move, but he wasn't upset.
''I love to be on a winning team so this feels good to me,''
Rumph said.
Rumph can play corner and safety, though it appears corner would be where he'll play
the most.
