Running back Clinton Portis practiced with pads on today, but that hasn't caused him to be more optimistic about his chances of playing Monday night against Minnesota.
After practice today, Portis said, ''The way things look, you’ll probably be seeing 26 against Dallas [on Sept. 17]. But who knows? If not, I should be ready for Houston. They want me to be 100-percent fully competent. They want me to be able to bench 285. I’ve never benched 285 in my life.’’
Portis also said he was originally told he might miss the first three or four games, but that he's ahead of schedule.
Shawn Springs did not practice and there's very little chance he'll play. End Renaldo Wynn did practice and said he'll play.

Ikechuku Ndukwe, the second-year guard who made the 53-man roster and then was
cut to make room for Todd Wade, was spotted in the locker room and then later
on the practice field. No, it wasn’t a case of him not getting the memo that he
had been released; he had just been signed to the practice squad. Missing was
Chris Pino, who was let go from the PS to make room for Ndukwe

A correction to the earlier report. Portis did take the field in pads after we
had gone inside. He did some very limited work, according to Joe Gibbs. Sorry
about the earlier report, that’s one of the drawbacks of “virtually live”
reporting.

Portis sounded rather pessimistic about the chances of him playing Monday
night, saying that it was important to look at the long haul. He did take a few
snaps in practice, though, so it would appear that he is improving. Whether or
not he improves enough to be able to play on Monday night remains to be seen.

Ex-General Manager Charley Casserly dropped by the media room briefly just to
say hi. He’s a great guy, very friendly and approachable. It’s too bad that it
didn’t work out for him with the Texans, but Dan Snyder had it exactly right
when he said that he fired the wrong guy when he gave Casserly the ax and kept
Norv Turner.

It was difficult to talk about football in the locker room as those asking
questions kept on focusing on Jon Jansen’s comments about HGH. Last night on
Bob Costas’ HBO program Jansen said that he estimates that 10%-15% of NFL
players use the undetectable performance-enhancing substance. None of the
players had too much to say about it, although nobody seriously disagreed with
his estimate of players using banned substances.

For his part, Jansen said that he wanted to say something about the issue before
it started to cut through to the integrity of the sport. He seemed to be quite
sincere and he
