Clinton Portis continues to say that he'll play. Like last week, however, it's not his word that matters. And coach Joe Gibbs says that Portis is unlikely to play following a week of limited work in practice.
Gibbs downgraded Portis to doubtful -- and ruled Shawn Springs out -- for Sunday night's pivotal game at Dallas.
''If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play,'' Gibbs said. ''It's really just because of soreness and it's in a different spot in his shoulder.''
But Portis didn't practice the previous week, either. Most likely, the Redskins realized they made a potential mistake in playing him in the opener and didn't want to risk losing him for a lengthier period of time.
Portis, though, is clinging to hope. Last week, he ruled himself out only to have Gibbs declare him likely to play.
''I didn't know the decision had been made,'' Portis said. ''I thought it was a game-time decision. I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in.
''I think that's what they're thinking [that the shoulder is worse], but I eat gunpowder twice a day now. As long as I'm on this gunpowder, I think I'm going to be all right.''
