Fred Smoot is back. And, more importantly to him, he's home.

Smoot signed with the Redskins Sunday morning, agreeing to a five-year deal worth $25 million. It's where he wanted to be all along, which is why he didn't make any visits or contact any other teams.

''This is my home,'' he said. ''I don't have to learn any new coaches. I don't havet o learn any new city. It's like moving back in that old room in mama's house. It had nothing to do with the contract. It had to do with the fact that I;m comfortable and I can play my game and be myself again. I thought it was a mistake to leave. I got a second chance to make it right.''

''I never really got comfortable [in Minnesota]. I felt like a stepchild. Now ;'m back in my mama's house.''

The Redskins agreed.

"A lot of us make mistakes in life,'' Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said. ''In his case, I think it was a bad feeling I had when we let Fred get out of here because I think he's a Redskin. It's not often in life when you have a chance to make up for it and that's what we're doing here. He's coming home. He's definitely one of the fan favorites here."

They let Smoot go via free agency two years ago and replaced him with rookie Carlos Rogers. However, he'll now be a third corner -- if the Redskins don't cut Shawn Springs. At this point, the Redskins don't need to cut him to free up money.

Smoot would be a third corner, though in the NFL, it's necessary to have three good corners.

''I know Gregg Williams. He ain't hesitating to put the best out there on the field,'' Smoot said. ''We'll let it play itself out.''
