Portis Eyes Opener

Redskins running back Clinton Portis participated more in the individual drills, but it's still unlikely that he'll play in the preseason.

Portis, who has missed almost all of camp with tendonitis in his knee, said he's targeting the Sept. 9 opener against Miami for his return.

''That's the date we're shooting for,'' Portis said.

Portis took part in one drill in which he ran in and around cones. He caught passes out of the backfield. He even participated in a drill in which he dove at a big, simulating blitz pickup.

...Left tackle Chris Samuels also increased his work, performing some agility drills before practice. He remains on pace to play in the opener.

...Linebacker H.B. Blades is among those who will have a chance to play the strongside with Marcus Washington sidelined. Blades played two seasons on the outside at Pitt. But Khary Campbell will get the start there.

...Randall Godfrey's status for Saturday is uncertain considering he just signed yesterday. But defensive boss Gregg Williams said Godfrey's physical style is welcomed. He was reminded how physical Godfrey was during practice today.

''He brought a smile to my face a couple of times when I saw him do some things in practice that I haven't seen in a long time,'' Williams said, ''in regards to how powerful he is. He is powerful enough to run you over if you don't sink you hips as he showed in a pass-rushing drill today. I think everyone was a little shocked when they saw how violent that collision was in practice today.''

...Linebacker Dallas Sartz missed practice because of an allergic reaction to a substance on a band-aid on his chin. Running back Dee Brown missed practice for personal reasons.

...One linebacker to watch is Matt Sinclair. The coaches like how hard he plays, but they also know finding a roster spot for him is asking a lot.
