The Redskins cut 23 players today, including a couple surprises, as they trimmed the roster to 52. They have one spot still available, presumably for someone they might claim off waivers.
Among the surprises: Wynn, who spent five years here, was cut as was veteran corner Ade Jimoh, who excelled on special teams but was a defensive liability. Also, Mason, an undrafted free agent out of Youngstown State, landed a spot after an impressive preseason.
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said of Wynn, ''Renaldo has meant so much to this team and to this community since he's been here. He's been a leader for us and he is a quality person. We had to try and make the best decision we could, but it is a very difficult choice to make. It's hard to get a better person than Renaldo and certainly we wish him the best.''
...The Redskins have only four receivers on the roster -- for now -- after cutting veteran Corey Bradford, Burl Toler, Carl Berman and Ryan Hoag.
...Only two draft picks made the roster:
first-rounder LaRon Landry and linebacker H.B. Blades. But two undrafted rookies made it in Mason and Stephon Heyer. Also, Chris Wilson, an ex-CFL player, landed a spot.
...They have only one fullback, but that's likely why they kept three tight ends (Eric Edwards being the third).
...They have nine defensive linemen, including three surprises: Boschetti, even though he was here before; Lorenzo Alexander and Wilson, who is the speed rushing type they lacked. Wilson did not fare well against first teamers, but showed enough against backups to warrant a spot. With his speed and size, he should be able to help on special teams as well.
...They kept five safeties, giving spots to both Reed Doughty and Vernon Fox after releasing Omar Stoutmire.
...David Macklin and Leigh Torrence are the fourth and fifth corners.
...The 8-man practice squad will be announced Sunday.
The veteran defensive end, released today by Washington, has no desire to quit playing. But, he said…
