...Running back Clinton Portis will start the opener, coach Joe Gibbs said. But how much his role is remains to be seen. Portis has not played in the preseason because of tendinitis in his knee. Gibbs said, ''It's not what you wanted, but it's what we were faced with.''
...Linebacker Marcus Washington practiced, but did not yet declare himself 100 percent ready for the opener. He did so last week, but has since toned it down, perhaps on the orders of a team that does not like to divulge much injury information. Washington had a black brace on his right elbow, which he said he's getting comfortable with.
...Linebacker Khary Campbell did not practice, but Gibbs called it a precaution. We're still not sure why there was any precautionary measures.
