Collins Earns Promotion

Quarterback Todd Collins jumped a spot in the quarterback order.

That only means he'll return to a familiar role: serving as the primary backup to a guy the team hopes can play all season.

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs made official what seemed clear on Monday. Collins, after a strong preseason, will now be the No. 2 quarterback behind Jason Campbell. Mark Brunell falls to the No. 3 role, a job he hasn't held for a full season since 1993.

''It was generally everything that's happened here this preseason,'' Gibbs said.

Collins and Brunell entered camp vying for the backup job along with rookie Jordan Palmer, who was cut last week. Collins outplayed Brunell, but Gibbs' loyalty to Brunell made some wonder if he would make this move. However, when Gibbs left the No. 2 job open, it gave Collins a chance.

‘'I was satisfied,'' Collins said. ‘'It made me feel good, [but] it won't change my preparation. I have experience in this position so you stay ready.''

Brunell handled his news with grace.

''I was disappointed,'' Brunell said, ''but it's coach's decision. Nothing changes for me. I still approach the same way. I wasn't surprised. It could've gone either way simply because you have two guys that are certainly qualified to be a backup. The opportunity to be part of this team. I consider it a privilege.''

...Everyone practiced today, though linebacker Khary Campbell was limited with a hamstring injury. His status for Sunday remains uncertain. Recommended Stories
