Will the Skins Sign a Single Free Agent?

The Redskins have been uncharacteristically quiet so far this off season. Has this been because they are cap strapped, or because they have learned?

Make no mistake about it, Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato have learned a bit from their past Free Agency transgressions and have decided not to do more cap damage by signing sub par players to huge contracts.

The Redskins are far from cap strapped contrary to some popular belief amongst some fans.

Clinton Portis recently restructured his contract to save the team quite a bit of 2008 cap coin. The question still remains if this was a typical restructure like all the other ones that have been done this off season.

However,if the Portis restructure is of the normal variety, and with the signing of Todd Collins and the incentives Jason Campbell hit, I have our current cap number at around + $6,200,000.

That may not seem like a lot of money, but when it comes to signing players, you don't need a lot of cap room in the year you sign them. About $3,000,000 to $3,500,000 of that cap room will be used on the rookies.

That means there is currently enough cap room to sign one major player and a few lesser players. Also, they had to have something in mind for the cap room created by Portis' restructure.

I don't think Snyder and Cerrato would make this much cap room and push money to the future without having a player or move in mind.

Here are the best available Free Agents left according to Adam Caplan:

Offense

Defense

Of course, there could be a trade in the works too, which also can't be discounted.

The Chad Johnson rumors are certainly out there and this cap room could be for him or another player the Redskins trade for.

Of course, many will argue if they trade for Chad Johnson that they really hadn't learned anything at all. But I don't agree with that. I will agree that I probably won't like the move, depending on the compensation.

But I don't feel that one trade will mean they have learned absolutely nothing.

So, to answer the title question, the answer is probably. They will probably sign a free agent or trade for a player eventually, but the days of the multiple huge Free Agency splashes are over.

For this off season anyway.
