Can the Skins beat the dvision rivals?
Running back Stephen Davis will start, but coach Steve Spurrier said he's not certain how much Davis can play. He missed the past two and a half games with a sprained knee, but has practiced all week. Davis did more running and cutting during practice, but, Spurrier said, until he does it in a game the Redskins aren't sure what he can do.
. . . If anything happens to coach John Mackovic at the University of Arizona, look for defensive line coach Ricky Hunley's name to surface as a replacement. Word is some alumni already have contacted him about possibly replacing Mackovic, under fire from the players and alumni. The Wildcats are 3-7 and have lost six straight in the Pac-10, a first in school history.
Hunley said he would definitely be interested. He interviewed for the position two years ago.
. . . One good news for Redskins fans: the forecast is for messy weather Sunday. That means Spurrier will be forced to stick with the ground game. Spurrier said one reason he threw the ball so much against Jacksonville is because it was a perfect night to pitch and catch. But the Giants have the NFL's 24th-ranked run defense and no one wins in the NFC East without a strong ground game. No one.
. . . There's more tension around Redskins Park this week as Sunday's loss shocked some people. They realize they're fighting to stay in the playoff race and put themselves in a deep, deep hole.
. . . Marvin Lewis' comments about this not being a Utopia caused a stir in the building. But one team source said it hasn't created a rift between he and owner Daniel Snyder. The owner still wants Lewis here.
. . . Look for receiver Willie Jackson to play more this week. He gives Washington a proven wideout opposite Rod Gardner. Problem is, they're similar players. Washington needs some speed--which it tried to get through the draft with the injured Cliff Russell.
. . . Tackle Jon Jansen certainly hasn't looked happy of late. Maybe it's the losing; maybe it's his contract. Most likely it's a combination of both. One thing he didn't want to discuss this week: Michael Strahan. He's tired of the constant stories about their battles.
. . . Justin Skaggs or Darnerien McCants will be on the active roster Sunday, but not both. Washington only plans to keep five receivers active, unlike the six it used the past two weeks minus Davis.
