CPND 53 Man Survivor: 7-25-2008

Warpath Insiders
Posted Jul 25, 2008

Well we’re a week into training camp and the 80 players are fighting it out for the final 53 places that will see them come out of camp as members of the Redskins. Eight others will make the practice squad. It’s a zero-sum game; every job a player wins means that another has lost his.

Here, WarpathInsiders.com fearlessly predicts who will survive the dreaded Turk and emerge as one of the final 53 men standing.

FINAL 53 MAN ROSTER PREDICTION

OFFENSE

QB’s (3) – Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan

SPECIAL TEAMS

LS (1) – Ethan Albright

K (1) – Shaun Suisham

P (1) – Durant Brooks

Last 5 On Last 5 Off
Durant Brooks P Derrick Frost P

This will be the one battle to watch – once the preseason games start.  It’s almost impossible to judge punters until they get into game situations.  Brooks has the spot on the roster for now because the Skins thought enough of him to invest a draft pick, and because Skins fans have been on a rollercoaster ride the last few years with “Frosty the Rollman”.

Chris Wilson DE Rob Jackson DE

I can’t see both making the team unless Wilson makes it as a reserve LB as well as a pass rusher.  Wilson showed potential last year recording 5 sacks in 17 games as a pass rush specialist but has started training camp off very slowly..  Jackson has been looking good in flashes at training camp.  For now Wilson has job.

Colt Brennan QB Derek Devine QB

Brennan only has the spot right now because of his drafted status.  Given he missed all the OTA’s and mini camp, and has started slowly in training camp, means that he must show Jim Zorn something in the next 6 weeks to beat out Derek Devine for the clipboard holder spot.  The loser will go onto the practice squad as both are eligible.

Kareem Moore S Chris Horton S

Depending on whether the Skins keep 4 or 5 safeties , so goes this competition.  Moore has injured himself again in the first week of camp which will set him back further (he missed all the offseason program).

Leigh Torrence CB Byron Westbrook CB

Again special teams will be the key here.  Torrence has the initial nod because he was on the roster ahead of Westbrook last year and does have speed.  Another interesting competition to watch when the games begin.

Early Practice Squad Prediction

1. Jason Goode TE
2. Byron Westbrook CB
3. Derek Devine QB
4. Marcus Mason RB
5. Andrew Crummey OL
6. Kerry Brown OL
7. Chris Horton S
8. Rob Jackson DE
