"I wanted to wait a couple hours but they said, ‘You don't have a couple hours, you should have done it an hour ago,' " Taylor said. "Time was of the essence."
What could have happened was a career-ending situation, where the nerve damage in his left calf would have left him with drop foot. But the surgery prevented that from happening.
Redskins director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer said Taylor wasn't in that sort of immediate danger when he underwent surgery around 6 a.m. Monday. But if the surgery had been delayed by a couple hours that could have been the case.
Tyer, incidentally, said this is the first time in his 37 years with the Redskins that he has seen this sort of injury, called compartmental syndrome. Former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington had this in his wrist when he was in the motorcycle crash a couple years ago.
Taylor was kicked in the left calf in Sunday's 24-17 win over Arizona. The pain worsened after the game, forcing him to the Virginia Hospital Center at 3 a.m. Monday. At 5 a.m. he talked on the phone to famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews who told him to have the procedure immediately.
Taylor had wanted to wait a few more hours to talk to others, but he was convinced by the doctors he didn't have that sort of time.
As for his return, nobody is certain when that will occur. Tyer said he knew of one star linebacker who had this same issue and missed one game.
"Nobody knows when the body will respond," Taylor said. "It could be a week or a couple months; you never know."
