. . . The Redskins also placed punter Bryan Barker on injured reserve after he suffered an open nasal fracture in the loss at Dallas. Doctors told Barker if he tried to play again this season another hit in the same area would be life threatening. He still has blood on his brain and will need more surgery before next season. But he can return next season.
''It definitely looked worse than it felt,'' Barker said. ''The initial shot, it felt like my eyes were exploding out of my head. But in terms of a headache or throbbing pain, I never had that. The worst pain I had was when I was landing in the airplane Friday.''
. . . Washington signed linebacker Orantes Grant on Wednesday. He spent two seasons with Dallas, which drafted him in the seventh round out of Georgia in 2000. The Cowboys cut him this summer. Redskins linebackers coach George Edwards coached him in Dallas.
. . . Wonder who would take over for Marvin Lewis should he depart? One player voted for Edwards, who has received favorable reviews elsewhere in the organization.
. . . Look for receiver Darnerien McCants and running back Ladell Betts to play more against New York. At least that's the plan today. With Steve Spurrier, things change all the time.
McCants said he hasn't played much since the Seattle win because he missed a few key blocks. He blocked the wrong guy on one play and missed blocks on others. He also isn't surprised his role was reduced under Spurrier.
''If it's not done perfect, it's not right,'' McCants said.
