Davis resigned to fate

Redskins running back Stephen Davis said he still wants to return and plans on doing so. But he also knows the reality of his situation.

Davis would count $11.4 million against the salary cap next year and Washington would save $5.2 million by releasing him. The Redskins could re-do his deal, but that doesn't appear to be likely.

''I've been here seven years and to see something like this could happen, it hurts my heart,'' Davis said. ''But that's the business. I can't dwell on it. I just have to move on. It's frustrating.

''There are some teams out there that if it doesn't work out here--and I hope it can--but if it doesn't work here, there are a lot of teams that need a running back.''

Davis once professed a desire to retire as a Redskin. Instead, he could bolt along with right tackle Jon Jansen, who will be a free agent and sources close to him say he knows he's gone, too.

''Most [running backs] don't want to be in an offense that throws as much as coach [Steve] Spurrier does,'' Davis said. ''I can't worry about that. I'm under contract and if it gets worked out, it gets worked out. If not I'll move on and try to help another team.''
