--The Redskins traded formerly retired OL David Brandt to Green Bay for a
2004 conditional seventh-round draft pick. Although the deal didn't boost their
tapped cache of 2003 picks (down to a second-rounder, third-rounder,
fifth-rounder and two in the seventh), it essentially gave them something for
nothing.
Brandt, still just 25, was Washington's top undrafted rookie in 2001 and a solid
prospect at both center and guard. He played on an outstanding Michigan line
with Redskins tackle Jon Jansen and, as a senior, three blockers who went in the
first or second round of 2001's draft.
Then he abruptly retired before 2002 training camp, having lost his desire to
play. That desire apparently has been rekindled, which was enough for Washington
to pick up a selection.
--An arbitrator heard the NFLPA's case against the management council on KR Chad
Morton, whom Washington signed to an offer sheet that the Jets matched.
The management council had ruled that the Jets were not required to match a void
clause in the Redskins' offer; the union later contended that they did. The deal
was for five years with the final two easily voidable, basically a gesture by
Morton to help Washington out with its cap while retaining the right to be a
free agent in 2003.
The NFLPA still feels an outright award of Morton to Washington is possible,
though league sources believe it's a remote chance. A decision was expected
shortly.
--The Redskins held a workout for local college players on Friday. Among those
attending were Maryland punter Brooks Barnard, one of the better options at a
position of need for Washington. Veteran DT Darius Holland also was scheduled to
be on hand.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's comfortable. He's comfortable with his surroundings.
He's comfortable with his teammates. Obviously we have some new ones, but you
have to feel very good that they will get to know him. I think last year it was
him getting to know them. So now the roles are reversed, and he'll meet them
halfway because he's such a good guy and a good person." -- Offensive
coordinator Hue Jackson on second-year QB Patrick Ramsey.
Team Skinny:
NEEDS/DRAFT PRIORITIES: The Redskins are looking ahead to the draft after
acquiring 11 new players and re-signing one during the first three weeks of the
league year. Their priorities are KR, P and reserve DT. The feeling is that no
one currently on the market is so compelling that the team shouldn't see what it
gets in the draft and then plug holes.
The draft doesn't seem to provide a ton of options at kick returner, but
personnel director Vinny Cerrato says it's strong at punter. Veteran P Tom Tupa
also is an option. There's a good chance Washington's second-round pick (12th of
the round and now the team's highest selection following compensation for Jets
WR Laveranues Coles) will be used on a defensive tackle.
The Redskins also are evaluating a few DT options in free agency, including
Darius Holland (Minnesota) and Jermaine Haley (Miami, RFA, seventh-round
compensation).
