Pro Career: On January 7, 2004 Joe Gibbs made his return to the Washington Redskins as head coach and team president. The most successful coach in Redskins history, Gibbs, who coached the team from 1981-1992, led the Redskins to four Super Bowls (XVI, XVII, XXII, and XXVI). He is the only coach to win three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks. His 140 wins ranks 14th in NFL history, and his .683 win percentage is the best among all NFL coaches with more than 125 wins. Gibbs coached with the St. Louis Cardinals (1973-1977), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1978), and San Diego Chargers (1979-1980), before joining the Redskins in 1981.
Background: Played tight end, offensive guard and linebacker at San Diego State. Coached at San Diego State (1964-66), Florida State (1967-1968), USC (1969-1970), and Arkansas (1971-1972).
