Coughlin: Giants are NFL's 'anonymous' team

Tom Coughlin | New York Giants

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin addressed the media on Thursday and relayed a sense of urgency for his team to make a bid for its first win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The New York Giants might be off to an 0-2 start, but they're not your average winless football team. With two Super Bowl championships the past six seasons, Big Blue has climbed to the top of the NFL summit and captured the league's ultimate prize. Mired in a two game slump at the onset of this season, head coach Tom Coughlin is imploring this year's group to outline their identity and put the rest of the league on notice.

Famed for their ferocious pass-rush and potent pass attack, the Giants defensive pressure is nowhere to be found and Eli Manning's seven interceptions are tops amongst all quarterbacks. With the team's win column still empty, Coughlin is hoping to light a fire under his scuffling unit.

"You're anonymous until you make a statement," said Coughlin. "We need a statement."

That statement might take place in Carolina, against Cam Newton's winless Panthers in Week 3. With both teams in full desperation mode, the winner Sunday could take a major step toward salvaging their season.

A major culprit for the Giants' lack of success this season has been their middling running game that ranks dead-last in the league with an average of just 36.5 yards per contest. With starting right tackle David Diehl still out of the starting lineup due to thumb surgery and David Baas making his return last Sunday following a knee sprain suffered during the preseason; New York's offensive front is very much in flux.

With an unsettled offensive line trying to find its groove, Coughlin has been encouraged by his unit taking baby steps forward to where it needs to be.

"I think I see us getting a little bit better each week," noted Coughlin. "Is that fast enough? Of course not. But I do see progress."
