Orakpo: The Right Pick

The Redskins may have gotten it right. They may have just lucked into a move that makes sense, fills a need and won't destroy their pocketbook.

They wanted Mark Sanchez, their public flirtations irking the usually calm Jason Campbell. But they wound up with Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo, a young pass rusher. Which just happens to be something they've needed for, oh, a long time.

Make no mistake; they tried to get Sanchez. It was not a consensus in the building on the desire to get Sanchez. It was clear, though, that owner Dan Snyder wanted him. They even talked to a couple teams before the draft about moving up and determined they would not be able to get him.

The Jets familiarity with Cleveland coach Eric Mangini – and his knowledge of New York's players – worked against Washington.

But the Redskins admitted they did talk to teams in the top five about a possible trade. Perhaps it worked out better that they did not.

Instead, they had a rather uneventful day. And a player many rated as a top-10 talent fell to them. Orakpo will play end, though he said the Redskins likely would try him as a strongside linebacker as well. However, Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato However, Orakpo is not without sins.

"He's very quick," said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. "But he doesn't have as explosive a first step20as Maybin. He's better against the run than Maybin. My issue with him is you don't see it all the time on tape. I see it a lot but I just don't see the consistency of front-end production that I like to see."

"The big thing there is durability," ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said. " He's had some injuries. He's broken down at times. But physically he's a 4-3 end with an ability to get after the quarterback with a good motor. Can he play on his feet? I think he can. DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman. He's that type of player. But the big questions is, can he stay full strength for a 16-game season."
